If your hair always ends up looking a little lacklustre within a few hours of washing it, and you envy anyone who manages to maintain shiny, bouncy locks then a) same here and b) we might just have discovered the reason….
Apparently, there’s one big shampooing mistake that can stop your hair from looking its best.
And, if you’re someone who usually showers in a rush or avoids using too much product because you think it’s making your roots greasy, then we bet you’re guilty of it.
Yep, according to the experts, that whole ‘lather, rinse, repeat’ cliché couldn’t be more important because you really must shampoo twice in a row.
Speaking to Byrdie, hairstylist Halli Bivona of the John Barrett Salon explained why the ‘double shampoo’ is so crucial if you want your hair to look as good as it can:
‘I find that a double shampoo actually makes blowouts last longer, because after two shampoos, your scalp is actually clean,’ she says. ‘So, it takes a few extra days for the oil to show up again.’
She adds: ‘At this point, the shampoo is working to break up the build-up and oil. But with a second wash, it doesn’t have to break through so much grime and can get a proper lather going. That way, the ingredients really work.’
On the flip side, Bivona warns that you need to be careful with double shampooing: don’t forget to follow up with conditioner.
‘You don’t want to dry out your hair,’ she says. ‘When doing a double shampoo, you definitely want to use a really moisturising conditioner on the ends; otherwise it’ll cause your hair to feel crunchy. This will make it static-y once it dries.’
Duly noted!
