While most of us prefer not to wear a full face of makeup every day, there are some occasions where you fancy a bit of extra coverage.

The problem is you can easily go overboard with your foundation and end up looking far from naturally flawless – which is particularly annoying at spring/summer events like weddings, where you’re out and about in the daylight.

So, if this is you, then listen up because a makeup artist has just shared her secret to achieving a perfect finish. And we can bet you’ve never tried it before…

It’s all down to using not one, but two shades of base: one of which is slightly lighter than the other.

This is because your face can easily end up looking a bit flat if it’s covered in one colour.

Explaining why it’s important to use two shades, make-up artist Shain Kish from Birchbox told The Sun that it’s all to do with the way light hits your face.

What you want is to mimic the way daylight hits your face by applying a lighter shade to the ‘high planes’ of your face, meaning the bits light would naturally bounce off, such as the forehead, tops of the cheekbones and chin.

‘The trick is to always keep two foundations on hand,’ explains Kish. ‘I suggest a medium coverage foundation in your lightest shade and a more sheer tinted moisturiser or BB cream in your darkest.

‘This way, you can adjust the colour and coverage for the season, too. Using your fingers, apply the light/medium coverage foundation onto the high planes of your face (in the shape of a sunburst and you only need a dime-size amount).

‘Then, I like to use a beauty blender and place a more generous amount of the dark/sheer foundation to the contours and outer rim of the face.

‘To top it off, overlap the darker colour over the lighter colour and blend seamlessly.’

So now we know!
