Travellers looking to bag a cheap city break to Europe this season should head to Eastern Europe, according to research by the Post Office.

Cities from Krakow to Budapest have been named the best-value destinations for Brits looking to get away for a spring break. The most expensive city for travellers has also been revealed and may surprise you. Hint: It’s not Paris or London.

If you fancy a weekend break abroad in the next couple of months, these are the 10 destinations that won’t break the bank…

1. Krakow, Poland

Krakow has been named the cheapest city to visit for a spring break by Post Office Travel Money. UK travellers hopping to the city for a two-night break can expect to spend around £165 for 12 typical short break items for two people, including accommodation in a three-star hotel, city transport, food, drinks and sightseeing.

At the opposite end of the scale, Amsterdam is the most expensive city and ranked 36th in the table, with visitors forking out £534.51 for the same items.

2. Vilnius, Lithuania

Vilnius is the second cheapest city to visit this spring, with a two-night break costing around £165.53.

3. Riga, Latvia

Spend two nights exploring Riga and you can expect to spend around £172.17, including £2.72 to visit the top attraction, the Dome Cathedral.

4. Warsaw, Poland

Take a trip back in time to this historic city this spring and you’ll spend an average of £180.53 for 12 typical holiday items, such as entry to top art gallery Zacheta National Gallery of Art for £3.36 per person.

5. Budapest, Hungary

A two-night break for two people in this beautiful city will cost you just £183.51 for 12 holiday items, including a cup of coffee for just £1.68.

6. Moscow, Russia

In Russia’s capital city, you can expect to pay a total of £199.64 for two nights, which includes a £9.50 to visit the the Kremlin.

Greece’s capital offers the best value in Western Europe, with a two-night city break costing an average of £200.42, which includes three-star accommodation for a total of £90.

9. Lisbon, Portugal

A trip to this popular Portuguese city will cost you around £208.85 for a two-night break, not including flights. A bottle of beer comes in at just £1.81.

10. Lille, France

Visit France this spring and the city of Lille will welcome you for an average of £208.95 for two nights, including a 48-hour travel card for £7.87 per person.
