Sledding around the snowy Arctic may sound like a pursuit of Santa Claus, but it’s also a great way to see the Northern Lights.
Now, you can experience the best way to see the natural phenomenon, in a cosy mobile hotel, that can be towed by snowmobile to the best viewing spots.
The small two-person cabin has launched in Arctic Finland by tour operator Off the Map Travel, and sits fixed on top of a sled.
It’s pretty snug inside, measuring only 8-feet wide, nearly 15-feet long and 6.5-feet tall. But a stay in the cabin will offer the essentials, including a comfortable bed, small table, gas heater and external dry toilet.
One of the highlights of the tiny cabin is the clear roof, allowing you to lie down and enjoy the view of the Northern Lights. You’ll also have access to snowshoes and personal sleds during your stay.
Fancy staying in one of these cabins?
At present, there are three mobile cabins located east of Kilpisjärvi, an isolated village in northern Finland – the area has more sightings of the aurora borealis than any other place in the country. All three are available to book until mid-April. They will then be moved and reopened in January 2019.
“The wilderness surrounding Kilpisjärvi is known for its remote and uninterrupted Arctic tundra,” Jonny Cooper, the founder of Off the Map Travel and an Arctic travel expert, told Mail Online.
“Away from any man-made light pollution, it is here that that the wilderness camp is placed for the winter, giving guests the best possible opportunity to experience the Northern Lights and simply enjoy the silence of the Arctic plains.”
The wilderness experience also involves guests being taught how to make and cook on a campfire.
On clear evenings, experts say there is more than a 70% chance of seeing the Northern Lights, in this area of Finland.
A three-night, four-day itinerary costs from £1,599 per person based on two adults sharing on a full board basis. For more information, visit Off the Map Travel.
