If you’re hoping to give your sex life a boost, it might be worth taking up a new hobby. At least if the results of a new study on cycling are to be believed.
Yep, according to new research by the University of California, women who cycle report better sex lives than those who don’t.
The team discovered this unexpected upside to the common workout after investigating whether cycling affects women’s urinary and sexual function.
And, after quizzing over 3,000 women in five countries, who were keen cyclists, runners or swimmers, the researchers found no link between cycling intensity and sexual or urinary issues.
In fact, the results indicated improved sexual function among high-intensity riders, who showed lower odds of reporting sexual issues than non-cyclists.
‘We found that lifetime miles ridden was associated with better sexual function, as measured by a common, validated questionnaire,’ explained lead author Thomas W. Gaither in a release.
However, there is one small catch: the researchers did confirm that there was link between cycling and genital numbness and saddle sores. Ouch! They also report in The Journal of Sexual Medicine that further research is now needed to establish whether cycling may contribute to an increased risk of developing urinary tract infections.
‘One of the more novel findings of the study is that lifetime miles ridden were directly correlated with saddle sores and urinary tract infections,’ Gaither added.
‘These findings may be considered by some as minor, however, saddle sores and infections may inhibit sexual activity. If we could find a way to prevent saddle sores and infections, we believe that cycling might improve the sexual health of women.’
