Classic, effortless and chic are just a few ways to describe the style of a Parisian and the way they decorate their homes is no different. Here’s how to recreate that certain je ne sais quois for the bedroom…
1. A touch of antique
The French are known for their flea markets. Treasure troves of antique curiosities that vary from the obscure to the grand. It’s no wonder then, that Parisians have mastered a rustic look full of character whilst still achieving elegance. Try buying one statement antique like a bureau, chandelier or even iron bed frame as a centrepiece to the room. Compliment with soft, feminine furnishings like ruched bedding and silk curtains. Très chic.
2. Mix Styles
Mixing modern and traditional styles in an understated way is something Parisians are fantastic at. Although we may not all have high ceilings, period fireplaces and wooden herringbone flooring like a lot of the French – mixing your classics with more urban pieces like colourful plastic chairs, fun rugs, distressed wood, unusual lamps or art prints is an easy way to create the eclectic look and inject a bit of playfulness.
3. Accessorise
Parisians know how to embellish and will almost always have a vase full of flowers, scattered literature or a gorgeous rug somewhere in their home. Perfect for that laid back (Jane Birkin sipping on a cup of coffee reading Proust) nonchalant look we all envy. Have an exposed clothing rail or a stacked pile of books on the floor. Even by adding seating and faux fur to your bedroom, you can blur the line between rooms for that apartment vibe.
4. Embrace Light
Notoriously dark, Parisian homes are all about embracing light. Keep walls and curtains serene white and add small touches of muted colours as seen here with this gorgeous pink throw and red vase. Although Parisians are notoriously minimalist; accents of colour can work really well too. A statement wall or bedside table contrasts with the industrial like French style wooden floors.
