Television screens are getting bigger and bigger, which may be great when you’re watching a film in your living room, but when the TV is off, it’s just a big, dark blank screen taking up your beautiful wallpaper.

However, Samsung has made combatting this a key feature with their latest TV range – the 2018 QLED TVs.

This week the company presented the range to the media in New York City and demonstrated a major key feature: The ambient mode.

The mode – which is controlled by a single button on the remote – allows you to change the blank screen function of the TV to match your wallpaper. By taking a photo of the wallpaper, the TV then picks this up and makes that the default ‘blank’ screen, giving the illusion that the television set is blending into the surroundings.

Here’s one example of how the TV could look against an exposed brick wall:

The mode also comes with a range of neutral backgrounds, meaning if your living room is painted in white, cream, stone or anything else, you don’t even have to take a photo of the surroundings. And the very thin border of the TV allows it to blend in with your interiors even more.

The ambient mode can also be used so that the TV displays the weather, news headlines, traffic reports, aesthetically-pleasing portraits or a collage of family photos, instead of just a blank screen.

“Our 2018 lineup of televisions are truly our most innovative and sophisticated yet, designed for today’s consumer who is mindful of the aesthetics of their space,” Jonghee Han, president of visual display business at Samsung Electronics, said at the press conference.

As well as this, the TV comes with just one thin cable, so all those thick, tangled wires making your tranquil living room just a little more frantic than you’d like, can also be a thing of the past.
