The majority of holidaymakers won’t feel guilty about taking hotel freebies home with them after their stay.
From branded notebooks to the mini toiletries you find in your bathroom, there are plenty of extras that you can make off with.
While it is often considered acceptable to nick something from your hotel room, there are some items that you should never touch.
Etiquette expert William Hanson has spoken out about the dos and don’ts of the penny-pinching practice.
As a general rule, Hanson recommends only taking items that you have used already.
If you have dipped into any of the hair or body products, they’re unlikely to be re-used again so it’s best you take them with you.
The etiquette aficionado told the Daily Mail: “In terms of the toiletries left out by hotels, if they are half used it is often better to take them as it is better for the environment and in many cases is encouraged.
“Other items that are already in the bathroom such as slippers are also fine to take as they cannot be used again once a guest has been wearing them.”
While taking these small bottles home with you won’t harm the hotel, the manners advisor advises against rinsing the hot drinks cabinet.
Nicking sachets of tea or coffee may not seem like a big deal, but you won’t actually be saving yourself much money by doing so.
Hanson explained: “When it comes to the tea and coffee, if you feel you have to take it home to get by, you should probably question why you are spending money on a hotel if you can’t afford coffee or tea bags.”
Stealing towelling or bathrobes is also not deemed to be acceptable.
Some places of stay even place notices in the room to leave these items be.
This is because the products aren’t convenient or cheap to replace for the hotel.
