Boob jobs will probably never go out of style.
But there’s been a huge shift toward more minimally-invasive procedures in the plastic surgery industry, according to data from The American Society of Plastic Surgeons.
The ASPS has seen a 200 percent increase in services like Botox, chemical peels, and fillers since 2000. Of the 17.5 million procedures performed in 2017 alone, just under 16 million were minimally invasive, while nearly 2 million were more substantial services, like rhinoplasty, boob jobs, and liposuction.
And overall, the total number of cosmetic procedures is still on the upswing. The number performed in 2017 ticked up 2 percent from 2016.
Ready to jump on that bandwagon, stat? The most popular invasive procedures in 2017 were:
1. Breast augmentation: 2017 saw a total of 300,378 breast augmentations, the enhancement of a patient’s boobs through the insertion of breast implants or the injection of fat transplanted from another part of the body, according to the ASPS. Notably, the ASPS also saw a spike in breast reductions, which were up 11 percent from 2016.
2. Liposuction: 246,354 liposuction procedures were performed in 2017, 5 percent more than in 2016, per the ASPS. Liposuction can be performed under general anesthesia or local anesthesia, alongside other procedures, the relative convenience perhaps accounting for so much popular interest.
3. Rhinoplasty: 218,924 rhinoplasties (a.k.a nose jobs) were performed in 2017. 2017 saw 2 percent fewer nose jobs than did 2016, according to the ASPS.
4. Eyelid surgery: Roughly the same number of eyelid surgeries—or blepharoplasty, if you’re fancy—were performed in 2017 as in 2016. This past year, physicians performed 209,571 total eyelid surgeries, which serve to tighten sagging skin or drooping eyelids, and can help reverse under-eye bags, the ASPS says.
5. Tummy tuck: 2 percent more tummy tucks—or, abdominoplasty, the removal of excess abdominal fat and skin and, often, the restoration of weakened stomach muscles—were performed in 2017 than in 2016, for a total of 129,753 procedures last year.
