Boffins at the Russian Academy of Sciences have developed a graph of magnetic activity pointing to the event they claim is on the way.

Significant alterations in the Earth’s geomagnetic atmosphere will be experienced in the three days before the storm.

If it occurs, it will be the third magnetic storm to hit Earth since the beginning of the year.

The first was registered on January 15 and the second on February 19.

The storms causes a temporary disturbance in the Earth’s magnetosphere and are triggered by solar wind shock waves.

These events have the potential to affect power grids and impede communications.

The 1859 Carrington Event disrupted telegraph systems across Europe and North America, and auroras were spotted across the world.

Scientists have estimated the magnetic field that protects the Earth has weakened by about 15% in the past 200 years.

And they have suggested this could be a sign the Earth’s magnetic poles could be about to completely flip.

Satellite data from the European Space Agency shows the magnetic field is weakening due to “restless activity” in the Earth’s core.

Daniel Baker, director of the Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics at the University of Colorado, said this flip could render parts of the world “uninhabitable”.
