Huawei has announced a new slimline, touchscreen laptop that has a webcam hidden under the keyboard for the super paranoid.

The Shenzhen-based firm which is looking to rival the likes of Apple and Samsung said its 13.9-inch Windows 10 MateBook X Pro is thinner than the most recent MacBook.

When it’s needed users can remove the function key to access the secret camera.
Although ideal for people with privacy concerns, many users might be conscious an upward facing webcam isn’t the most flattering angle to be filmed from.

The company’s new laptop will ship in three configurations that cost between £1315 ($1,842/ 1499 euros) and £1667 ($2,334/ 1899 euros).

The super wide screen has a resolution of 2160 x 1440 pixels and the device comes in two colours – Space Gray and Prestige Gold. It comes with either 8GB or 16GB of RAM.

The keyboard is also spill proof and has drainage below the keyboard case.
It also has software that means files can be transferred between Huawei phones and the Matebook X Pro.

The new device also has a 91 per cent screen to body ratio which is close to edge-to-edge display, writes PC World.
Huawei has become increasingly influential in the smartphone market in recent years by aggressively competing with Apple and Samsung.

The Chinese firm announced three new tablets as part of its MediaPad M5 series – including an M5 Pro that can be connected to a keyboard and works with a stylus in a similar fashion to Microsoft’s Surface line of products.

‘The Huawei MateBook X Pro and Huawei MediaPad M5 Series are at the forefront of a new generation of mobile computing that empowers every aspect of your life’, said Huawei chief executive Richard Yu.

‘Today’s consumers want more: they expect their technology to be both powerful and adaptable – and Huawei is committed to creating devices that not only meet these expectations, but create experiences that make everyday computing extraordinary’, said Mr Yu.

The device will be shipped to North America this spring and MailOnline has contacted the company to find out when it will be available globally.

Speaking on stage at the launch, which took place in Barcelona ahead of tech show Mobile World Congress, Mr Yu also spoke of increasing the company’s ‘brand awareness’ as it battles household names such Apple.

He also said Huawei shipped more than 150 million smartphones in 2017 – the company is due to reveal its next flagship phone at the end of March.

Hundreds of new smartphones are expected to be announced when MWC opens on Monday, with new devices set to be revealed by the likes of Sony and Samsung, as well as smaller start-ups and other firms exhibiting at the four-day event.
