Jennifer Lawrence tried to watch Phantom Thread, and, well, just couldn’t.
On an episode of Marc Maron’s WTF podcast Monday, Lawrence revealed that she attempted to watch Paul Thomas Anderson’s latest movie Phantom Thread, but stopped after just three minutes of viewing.
“I got through about three minutes of [Phantom Thread]. I put in a good solid three,” Lawrence said after Maron asked if she had seen the film. “I couldn’t. I’m sorry to anybody who loved that movie.”
Maron noted that it’s a movie that takes a bit of time to get into, but Lawrence said she just couldn’t give it her time.
“It was three minutes and I was just like ‘oof,'” she said, although she relented and said she would give it another shot before listing off more reasons she didn’t really want to finish it.
“I mean, is it just about clothes?” she said. “Is [Reynold Woodcock (Daniel Day-Lewis)] kind of like a narcissistic sociopath and he’s like an artist so every girl falls in love with him because he makes her feel bad about herself and that’s the love story? … I’ve been down that road, I know what that’s like, I don’t need to watch that movie.”
She didn’t mention exactly who she was referencing with that comment, but she said it wasn’t Darren Aronofsky, and then said she actually made the whole thing up. Either way, she didn’t feel like watching Phantom Thread.
It’s not the most approachable film, that’s for sure. But then again, neither was Mother!.
