Ironing is one of the most time-consuming household chores going, so it’s no wonder many of us dislike it.

But did you know there’s a nifty hack for making ironing quicker and easier?

According to an article by the Good Housekeeping Institute, adding a layer of tin foil under the ironing board cover means items become crease-free quicker.

This is because the foil reflects heat straight onto the underside of garments, effectively acting like a second iron.

We spoke to Verity Mann, Head of Testing at the Good Housekeeping Institute, to get some more information about the ironing hack.

“When placing the foil beneath your ironing board cover, ensure it is shiny side up in order to best reflect the heat,” Verity explained.

“You don’t need to turn the garment over, thanks to the foil, you will only need to iron one side as the foil reflects the heat and will effectively take care of the other side saving you time,” she went on.

After you’ve finished, don’t worry about taking the foil away.

“There is no need to remove the foil from your board. You can continue using the same piece of foil for a long time. It won’t lose its reflecting power.

“If the foil gets crumpled or wrinkled, it may end up adding some new wrinkles to your fabrics. Replace your foil if it isn’t nice and smooth,” Verity said.

Verity advised heavy duty foil will probably work the best for this trick. Also, be aware of moisture potentially building up on the foil after you’ve ironed.

“You should get in the habit of removing the cover after each use to allow the moisture to dissipate,” according to the Good Housekeeping Institute.
