Teens are fleeing Facebook faster than previously anticipated, according to a study released Monday.

The analysis from research firm eMarketer shows that in 2018, fewer than half of Americans ages 12 to 17 will use the social network at least once a month.

Instead, younger users are flocking toward Snapchat. While Facebook stands to lose 2 million users under the age of 24 this year, Snapchat is expected to add about 1.9 million, according to the study.

It’s not all bad news for Facebook chief executive Mark Zuckerberg, though. Instagram, which is owned by Facebook, will pick up 1.6 million younger users this year, bringing its total number of users to 104.7 million, eMarketer predicted.

In his company’s earnings report late last month, Zuckerberg was confident in the direction Facebook is headed.

“By focusing on meaningful connections, our community and business will be stronger over the long term,” he said.
