Jim Carrey will not face trial over his late girlfriend Cathriona White’s suicide. White’s mother Brigid Sweetman and estranged husband Mark Burton had accused the actor of giving his then-girlfriend Cathriona three sexually-transmitted diseases and providing the drugs White used to take her own life in September 2015, but it has now been revealed the allegations have been dismissed. A spokesperson for Carrey confirmed that the case had been dismissed on January 25; they confirmed there would be no further comment but that the Carrey was ‘looking forward to moving on with his life’. Michael Avenatti, the attorney for Sweetman and Burton, issued a brief statement which simply read: ‘We have no further comment at this time.’

White’s death was ruled as suicide with the LA County Coroner’s office releasing details from the post-mortem in July 2016. Carrey and White, a 30-year-old Irish make up artist, had separated in the days before her death and he had text her the night before asking about a bottle of painkillers that had gone missing. Bottles next to her bed were later revealed to be under the pseudonym Arthur King, and intended for Carrey. The case involved the Drug Dealer Liability Act. ‘We are clearly not alleging that Jim Carrey was selling drugs out of the back of his pickup truck and was therefore not marketing or selling in the traditional sense of what that word would bring to mind,’ said Sweetman and Burton’s lawyer in May 2017. But Carrey’s lawyer Raymond Boucher argued the plaintiffs court papers are vague regarding the wrongful death claim because they do not state whether they believe White died from negligence or from an intentional act.

The development comes a few months after Jim filed a countersuit against his accusers, insisting they were trying to extort him. He wrote on Twitter: ‘There’s a lot of news coming out today. This is my statement on the matter. ‘Today I filed a cross-complaint against Filippo Marchino, The X-Law Group, Mark Burton and Brigid Sweetman. Unfortunately, I made the mistake three years ago of giving in and settling false claims made against me by Mr. Marchino, on behalf of Cat, as mounting a public defense is a very costly and painful process. At the time I felt Cat was being exploited by Marchino. ‘Since this new case was filed, I have discovered the depth of deception behind those false claims, the kind of deception decent people fall for, because to us, such behaviour is unimaginable. I will not give in a second time to these same fraudulent charges initiated by Cat’s husband in name but not substance Mark Burton, and her estranged mother. ‘Nor am I responsible for what these desperate characters have inadvertently unearthed about the woman I adored. I was clearly blinded by my affection. Regardless, I will hold a place of empathy, and forgiveness for Cat and continue to focus on the many blessings in this life (sic).’
