A safari-goer in Kenya captured well-timed video of a lion attempting to attack a baby elephant before being driven away by the calf’s mother.
The video shows an elephant dubbed Nablus by researchers walking with her day-old calf Jan. 18 in Kenya’s Samburu National Reserve.
A lion approaches the pair from the rear and charges, appearing as though it is about to make a meal of the baby, but Nablus quickly turns on the predator.
Nablus lets out a loud trumpet and charges at the lion, causing it to flee without ever reaching the newborn.
”This is the first time lions have been documented stalking and attacking elephant calves in Samburu National Reserve,” the filmer wrote.
