It turns out we’ve been cooking them completely wrong all this time, according to a leading chef
Everyone loves a banger – grilled, fried or baked, they’re one of the UK’s most popular foods.
You can eat them in a fry-up, pop them in a bread roll or chuck them on the barbecue.
But it turns out we’ve been cooking them completely wrong all this time, according to a leading chef.
Instead of cooking them on a high heat, whether that’s under the grill, in a frying pan or on the barbecue, they should be heated nice and slow.
Chef and cooking blogger Martin King, known as The Why Chef , says the perfect banger should take at least 30 minutes to cook.
Cook them in a frying pan for 30 minutes on a low heat and with a knob of butter
Don’t throw the sausages straight onto the barbecue
He explained: “Cooking them for a long time at a low heat is going to cook them through sufficiently, allow for the fat to render and caramalise in the pan and with no worry that they’re going to turn into boot leather.
“If you’re looking for delicious, then this is a winner.”
And they should be done in a frying pan with a big knob of butter – even if you’re barbecuing them this summer.
Martin explains: “Butter adds to the flavour. You could use oil, but it doesn’t compliment the sausage fat.”
And you need to be careful about which sort of butter you use.
Martin says salted butter should be avoided as the salt could crystallise in the pan.
