We all have those in-flight essentials you don’t set foot on a plane without, from celeb magazines to squishy travel pillows, but it looks you need to upgrade your kit next time you fly to include one skincare essential…

It turns out you should never travel on a plane without wearing sunscreen, according to a top dermatologist.

Yep, we all know that you need to wear SPF on a hot holiday, but it looks like we should start applying it that bit earlier on…

Being exposed to strong UV rays through plane windows could actually end up damaging your skin.

Dr Sweta Rai of the British Association of Dermatologists told the Sun Online: ‘Pilots are at higher risk of skin cancer and sun-induced damage as they sit in bright light.

‘The windows they sit at when piloting the plane are huge and as a result they wear sunscreen as standard. But passengers on flights should take heed and do the same.

‘The window next to your on a plane may be small, but you’re closer to the ozone layer on a flight by tens of thousands of feet.

She continued: ‘The sun’s rays are much more harmful at this level and we should all be wearing sun scream when flying.’

Dr Rai says that you should apply suncream ‘on all exposed sites’, including your face, neck and chest. And you’ll also need to reapply it every two hours on long-haul flights…

Anyway, next time you head to Boots at the terminal to stock up on 3-for-2 suncream, maybe just slather some on right away…
