When it comes to decorating your home, you can find inspiration from all sorts of places, from art and movies to the natural world and fashion.

One fun area of inspiration – in this case suited to decorating a baby’s nursery – is children’s literature. Rather than going for the traditional blue/pink or neutral yellow décor, you can be a little more creative and imaginative.

Budget Direct has created some exciting, fantastical designs to provide some interiors motivation by imagining how famous children’s authors would design your baby’s nursery, based on some of their most famous novels.

From JK Rowling to Hans Christian Andersen, take a look at these six nursery rooms for some inspiration…

1. Dr Seuss nursery room

This fun and whimsical nursery is influenced by the illustrations from Dr Seuss’ The Cat in the Hat and Green Eggs and Ham. The car crib and outlandish lampshade perfectly represent the mixture of children’s doodles, surrealist art and art deco.

2. Eric Carle nursery room

Inspired by The Very Hungry Caterpillar and Carle’s other stories, this nursery room is colourful, bold, and contrasts bright motifs with a white background. Shabby-chic furniture works well with the animal themes due to its natural, weathered look.

3. Maurice Sendak nursery room

Maurice Sendak’s Where the Wild Things Are nursery room would emphasise a warm, natural feel by using muted earth tones and natural plants. The design reflects a combination of crosshatched 19th-century prints with the playfulness of cartoons.

4. Lewis Carroll nursery room

Lewis Carroll created fantastic characters and imagery in his famous story Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, which would fit perfectly in a baby’s nursery. From Cheshire Cat to Mad Hatter, these imaginative creations take centre stage in the room, which also has a huge tea cup cot.

5. JK Rowling nursery room

Step into this magical Harry Potter themed nursery room, which mirrors imagery from Hogwarts and the enchanting shops of Diagon Alley. The colour scheme here boasts dark green, burgundy, and other rich colours associated with magical schools. You might not have a real Firebolt, but you can always prop a normal broom against the wall for atmosphere.

6. Hans Christian Andersen nursery room

Famous for his wonderful fairy tales, Hans Christian Andersen delved into many mystical lands through his writing. This nursery room, inspired by his stories, uses ducks, swans and a farmyard theme based on The Ugly Duckling, and icy colours as seen in The Snow Queen.
