This is the astonishing moment a gigantic aircraft carrier tilts on its side as it performs incredibly tight turns at high speed.
The US Nimitz-class aircraft carriers are some of the biggest Navy ships ever built and they weigh around 100,000 tonnes.
But they’re surprisingly agile in the open ocean, even at top speeds, as evidenced in this footage of the USS Abraham Lincoln.
The ship houses 6,000 sailors and more than 70 aircraft at a time and they over 1,000 feet long.
But that doesn’t prevent it from skimming along the water, twisting and turning as it goes.
Because aircraft carriers are such high-value targets, they have to be able to make tight turns to avoid collisions or enemy torpedoes.
In the video the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN-72) can be seen making hairpin turns in the Atlantic Ocean after completing its midlife Refueling and Complex Overhaul (RCOH).
The clip was captured on May 11, 2017 and has 250,000 views on YouTube.
It seems as if the ship is about to flip sideways into the water but it somehow manages to maintain complete control.
