Thinning hair is something that can affect many women, particularly as we get older. The causes are varied – everything from your hormones to your genetics – so it’s important to visit your GP if you notice signs of hair loss.

But there’s one thing you can stop doing immediately if you want to help protect your crowning glory – and it involves the way you style your hair.

According to top trichologist Anabel Kingsley, tying your hair up in a high ponytail is best avoided as it can put too much pressure on your roots and actually lead to permanent baldness in extreme cases.

‘Overly tight hairstyles, such as wearing your hair in tight ponytail or braid, can put too much traction on the hair and hair follicle,’ Kingsley told the Mail Online.

‘Initially, this can cause breakage and may even pull strands out. If done repeatedly over a long period of time, permanent hair loss can occur. This type of hair loss is called “traction alopecia”.’

So what to do if you need to tie up your hair – at the gym, for example – but don’t want to risk damaging your roots?

‘To help prevent this, opt for a looser style,’ she said.

And, if you’re not sure whether your ponytail is too tight, Kingsley has a top tip: ‘As a rule of thumb, if a style hurts your scalp – it will likely be damaging to your hair.’
