A Minnesota man has pulled off a sky-high marriage proposal by carving ‘Marry Me’ onto snow-covered lake and then flying his long-time girlfriend over his handiwork.
Gavin Becker, a University of North Dakota aviation student, carried out the proposal over Eighth Crow Wing Lake near Nevis in the state’s north on Sunday.
Becker enlisted the help of his family to pen the life-changing question using a snow blower on the frozen lake.
It took more than four hours to create the 25-foot-tall letters and a massive heart.
Becker then rented a plane and took high-school sweetheart Olivia Toft for a trip over the frozen lake.
Their families say Toft had asked for a plane ride for Christmas so she was completely unaware of what was in store.
Becker told Twin Cities Pioneer Press that once up in the air, he had tried to hide the proposal until the perfect moment.
‘Trees hid it a little bit. You could read it pretty well,’ he said.
He was left fumbling for the ring when she eventually saw the message.
‘She looked at me a second, then looked again at the message a second, then back at me. In my head, I said, ‘Now’s the time to do it.’ I fumbled for the ring,’ he said.
‘In the moment, all I was able to get out was, ‘Will you marry me?’
Becker’s parents Ed and Sara actually got engaged on the same lake 28 years earlier when his father proposed during a boat ride.
The happy couple are yet to set a wedding date.
