We all know there’s nothing more frustrating than the painful, stinging tears you have to endure while chopping an onion.
If they didn’t make everything so tasty we’d avoid onions altogether, and have even considered investing in special onion goggles to save our poor peepers in the kitchen.
But, in news that has definitely brightened this dreary January day, we’ve just discovered that ‘tearless’ onions have officially been created.
*Why has this taken so long, science?*
Developed by US brand Bayer after a whopping 30 years of cross-breeding, this magical creation – dubbed ‘the sunion’ – is set to hit supermarket shelves across the pond in the coming months.
So, how do they work, we hear you wonder…
Well, while levels of tear-causing compounds increase over time in regular onions , Bayer says the opposite is true of ‘sunions’, meaning they lose their tear-triggering effect before you chop them. They’re also said to taste milder and sweeter.
Sunions will be available to buy in the US from March, and the Independent reports that Bayer plans to expand its growing capabilities, meaning that can expect soon expect to enjoy tear-free onions in the UK, too…
Can’t WAIT.
In the meantime, we’ll probably stick to a few tried and tested tricks to avoid tears, like soaking them in water before we chop.
Or we might just bite the bullet and actually buy those ‘onion goggles’, after all…
