We’ve already heard that, when it comes to changing your bed sheets, the optimum amount to do so is once a week. This keeps your sleeping area fresh, clean and free from bacteria. But is this the same for your pillowcases?

According to Australian cleaning expert, Shannon Lush, pillowcases should be changed a lot more often. In fact, they should be changed every other day!

‘Pillowcases should be changed every second day without fail,’ Ms Lush told news.com.au. ‘It’s against your face, and your hair holds more dirt than anywhere else on the body. It’s like a mop.

‘Most people don’t wash their pillows enough, and it’s really vile. It collects old skin cells, which we shed especially when we are asleep. The pillow is a major cause of blackheads.’

Your bed sheets, and pillow cases especially, can accumulate bacteria, dead skin, body fluid, fungus and mites throughout the night, which is obviously not great for your skin and general health.

We likely spend a lot of time and money on our skincare routines to keep our faces looking firm, fresh and blemish-free – but that could all go to waste if you are putting a clean and moisturised face onto a dirty pillowcase for eight hours.

When taking into account previous research which showed that only 42% of people changed their bed sheets once a week, 36% every two weeks and 15% only once a month, it doesn’t seem likely that many people clean and change their pillowcases every other day.
