This Is Why Your Skin Gets All Prune-y In The Winter

Your hands are missing a lot of moisture. The layers of the skin lose volume when the amount of water inside their cells decreases. The surface of skin doesn’t shrink, so it puckers down to fit what’s below. The solution is intense hydration and repairing the skin’s barrier, a layer of cells that keeps moisture in and bacteria out.

Before bed and after washing your hands, rub on a cream with hyaluronic acid (it draws water into the skin) and ceramides (lipid-like ingredients that hold cells together and improve the barrier). Seal it with an occlusive, petroleum jelly-based salve, like Vaseline. One last thing: Do you also have tiny blisters or flaking, or a stiff, waxy feel? If so, you may have eczema. Apply hydrocortisone cream once or twice a day.
