Succeeding at work is something we all strive for, but sometimes it can be hard to know whether you’re doing a really good job, or just what’s expected of you.

And while it can feel like a lack of feedback is a negative thing or like you don’t know where you stand, Suzanne Bates, CEO of Bates Communications and author of ‘All the Leader You Can Be’, insists it can sometimes be a sign that your boss is content with your performance.

She notes that employees might think managers shows people they’re valued by showering them with praise, but that isn’t always the case.

‘They either think you already know you’re in good standing, they don’t want to seem to be favouring you, or they simply just forget because you do so many things well,’ she told Business Insider UK.

Essentially, Bates’ point is that no feedback is good feedback, because your boss would likely tell you if you were doing something wrong, or they didn’t think your performance was up to scratch.

That said, if you would like more feedback? Ask for it!

Bruce Tulgan, the founder of RainmakerThinking and author of It’s Okay to Manage Your Boss adds, ‘You should always make sure you are getting expectations spelled out in vivid detail and you should be tracking your performance every step of the way. Keep score for yourself! Then you won’t have to guess.’
