We all love a good turkey sandwich or soup in the days following the 25th, but did you know there are some really great health benefits to choosing turkey as your main meat, too?
According to Miriam Stoppard, everyone’s favourite festive bird is low in calories and high in protein.
Without the skin on, it’s also low in fat, too.
‘White turkey meat is lower in calories and has less fat than dark meat. Typically, turkey is 2/3 white and 1/3 dark meat,’ she wrote in The Mirror.
‘The meat is also a source of iron, zinc, potassium and phosphorus, as well as vitamin B6 and niacin, which are both essential for the body’s energy production.’
She explains that 85g of roasted turkey breast contains around 125 calories, whereas the same amount of dark meat contains around 150.
It’s also low GI and can help lower cholesterol over time.
All of this sounds like a good reason to indulge – try a recipe such as our turkey and cous cous salad or turkey wraps if you need some inspiration for your leftovers.
