A lot of babies are likely to be named Harry or Olivia in the new year, according to a new survey.

The parenting website Emma’s Diary asked 3,500 expectant mothers their baby name choices and found Harry to be the most popular for a boy and Olivia for a girl.

Harry is likely to be a favourite thanks to a renewed focus on Prince Harry as he prepares for a big 2018 himself, thanks to his upcoming wedding to the actress Meghan Markle, as well as the continuing popularity from JK Rowling’s Harry Potter series.

Olivia has been a popular name for expectant parents over the past few years and, according to the survey, shows no sign of slowing down any time soon.

Other royal choices are also being considered among soon-to-be parents of baby boys, with George ranked at number four and Arthur, James and Henry also featuring in the top 20.

For girls, there appears to be a trend of names ending with an ‘a’. Isla is the second most popular choice, following Olivia, and then Ava, Amelia, Sophia and Freya also make the top 10.

The royal influence is also seen in girls’ names as Charlotte is ranked at number 13.

It’s not just traditional influences that are a factor though. Aria, a popular character on the huge series Game of Thrones is featured 18th on the list.
