The Duke of Cambridge has spoken about his concerns over the effect of social media on children, branding the situation ‘alarming’.
Speaking at a children’s media summit, William delivered a hard-hitting speech, saying: ‘As a parent, I believe we have grounds for concern’. He attended alongside the Duchess of Cambridge, who is currently expecting the couple’s third child.
The Duke, whose children George and Charlotte are four and two, said parents are ‘feeling the pressure’ of technology and making up the rules ‘as they go along’.
‘We have all let technology slowly creep into our lives,’ said the royal. ‘How do we protect family time and teach our kids about actual connection, when all their communication is through their phone?
‘How do we convince our children to go outside and be active and fit, when all they want to do is play online?’
During the event in Manchester, William also praised the city for dealing with the horrific terrorist attack at the Manchester Arena in May.
‘Manchester has had a tough year and I personally stand in awe of the way that the people of Manchester have united in bravery and support of one another,’ he said. ‘This community is a great example to all of us, wherever we are from,’ he added.
