It seems like there’s no end to the number of hacky cooking tricks for mastering our favourite foods. From meals you can make in a microwave to feasts prepared on a panini press, hacky snacks could practically be its own food group.
Who doesn’t love a perfect meal with less fuss that’s done in half the time? Indeed, cooking hacks are the wave of the future, and a quick search of Pinterest will show that if there’s anything the home chef community loves, it’s gotta be egg hacks.
And it looks like noted former vegan (and all-around Hollywood cool girl) Drew Barrymore has a new trick to add to the hard-boiled egg hack craze. Spoiler: this one’s as amazing as they come.
Hard-boiled eggs are super-versatile, and a calorie counter’s dream at just 70 cals each. And Drew’s new hack cuts down on time, hardware, and steps. Behold: the no-flame hard-boiled egg.
We first snagged this tip from Drew’s Instagram, where her pics make the process look totally easy. Though be warned: it might take a couple tries for you to get it down to a science.
To make a flameless hard-boiled egg, you’ll want to fill a large, deep glass with very hot water. Tap is fine, but you can also zap a glass of water in the microwave the get it to a super-hot temp if you need to — just be sure to use a potholder when you remove it.
Next, use a slotted spoon to carefully drop your egg into the glass. Let it sit undisturbed for about 15 minutes, then use the spoon to remove and rinse carefully under cold water. Roll the egg in a paper towel to loosen the shell, peel as usual, and voila!
If the water worked its magic, you should have a perfectly hard-boiled egg. Use the hack for when you need a midday snack, are craving a couple devilled eggs, or have half an hour to test a new trick — no stove necessary.
