The one thing you should never say to your partner when they’re upset

We often view communication as an essential part of a healthy relationship.

But, according to one relationship expert, if your partner is upset about something then pushing them to talk about it could actually make things worse…

Jane Greer, author of What About Me? Stop Selfishness From Ruining Your Relationship, told Women’s Health that some people just don’t cope with difficult feelings or emotions by talking about them.

They may see opening up as a sign of vulnerability, or they may just prefer to deal with issues in other ways, such as by exercising.

As a result, pushing them to confide in you with sentences like ‘Come on, tell me’ or ‘I want to know what you’re thinking’ could upset them if they feel like you’re not respecting their wish to deal with things by themselves.

It also takes the focus off their problems and makes it all about you and your reaction to it.

If your partner does want to talk, then great. If not, Jane recommends showing your love and support in other ways – cook them their favourite meal, treat them to a little gift or sweet texts, or maybe pick up a few of their chores.

And remember – just because they don’t want to talk right now, it’s no reflection on you or your relationship.
