If you feel like you’ve been losing lots of hair recently, with strands popping up practically everywhere in your home, then don’t worry you’re almost definitely not alone…

That’s because a new study has confirmed what many of us have long suspected – you really do lose more hair at certain points of the year: the summer and autumn.

A team from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in the US has confirmed that seasonal hair loss is real by studying 12 years of Google search data from eight different countries.

And, lo and behold, they found that searches for hair loss seem to spike in the summer and autumn, while fewer people seem to be concerned with shedding in the spring, based on the data from 2004-2016.

‘This study synthesised digital epidemiological data from both hemispheres to confirm the clinical suspicion that the summer and fall [autumn] seasons are associated with greater hair loss,’ said senior author Dr Shawn Kwatra in the British Journal of Dermatology.

‘This finding is clinically relevant for patients presenting in the summer and fall months with worsened hair loss and has implications in assessing the effectiveness of therapies.

‘Future research will further clarify this association and examine the physiology of the hair cycle.’
