Colds are unavoidable most winters, with most of us catching an average of between two and five each year.
But despite it being the most common of all ailments, science still doesn’t have a cure other than plenty of rest.
However, it seems our grandmothers had the right idea when they tucked us up in bed with a big bowl of chicken soup. According to nutritionist Sarah Flower, the centuries-old remedy may be one of the best out there…
‘There are even mentions of chicken broth being used by ancient Greek physicians,’ she told The Mirror. ‘Bone stock is full of vitamins and minerals, as well as gelatine and collagen, to help get you back on your feet.
To really get the most from this immune-boosting meal, skip the tinned version and make it yourself from poultry bones, adding vegetables for extra nutrients.
Sarah also recommends adding turmeric, cinnamon, ginger to help your metabolism, and some chilli – it’s a natural decongestant.
Other natural remedies given the thumbs up by Sarah include garlic for its anti-viral and anti-bacterial properties – add some extra to your meals, or take supplements – and a brandy, lemon and honey hot toddy to soothe your throat and help you sleep.
