Have you ever wondered what the life span of your underwear is? Well, according to these experts, we’re pretty confident that it’s a lot less than you think it is. In fact, when was the last time you found a hole in your socks but wore them anyway? Or felt your bra become a little bigger but just ignore the fit? There are some things that we just don’t think we ever need to replace unless we change size. A bra is for life, right?

Well, maybe not! According to experts at BlueGuard, the folks who’ve invented a pair of socks they promise will last forever, we should be replacing our bras every 6-8 months. “Washing machines cause the padding in bras to lose their shape, and for those who wear the same bra frequently, the elastic won’t last much longer than half a year before it starts to become slack and unsupportive, one expert said. “Make bras last longer by rotating them, and washing them in cold water, which can help elastic recover.”

Equally your underwear should be replaced every six months, while they recommend that socks are thrown away after a year.

But before you go throwing out your favorite bra every six months, our experts in the Textiles, Paper & Plastics Lab at the Good Housekeeping Institute say it’s important you check-in with your bra that frequently to make sure it still fits properly and offers good support. After all, you may not wear the same bra every day! You should always lay them flat to dry as hanging would cause them to stretch out.
