If there is one trick that many experts will tell you when you’re looking to lose weight, it’s to not keep junk food in the house.
The old saying, “Out of sight, out of mind” really rings true when it comes to dieting.
Because if you don’t have that jar of peanut butter in the cupboard or that block of “just incase” chocolate stashed away in your bedside table then you have less chance of eating it.
So what should you stock your cupboards with instead?
According to researchers at the University of Warwick, foods rich in amino acids will leave you feeling fuller for longer – quashing the need to reach for calorie-ridden snacks.
Feeling full after a mean is determined by a group of cells in the brain known as tanycytes which are stimulated by amino acids.
The study, published in the journal Molecular Metabolism listed these nine foods that will keep you fuller for longer and subsequently help with weight loss:
1. Apricots
2. Almonds
3. Lentils
4. Plums
5. Chicken
6. Pork shoulder
7. Sirloin steak
8. Mackerel
9. Avocados
These foods all boast a high concentration of amino acids, leaving you feeling fuller than if you were eating other foods.
Dr Nicholas Dale, Professor of Neuroscience at Warwick University said: “Amino acid levels in blood and brain following a meal are a very important signal that imparts the sensation of feeling full.
“Finding that tanycytes, located at the centre of the brain region that controls body weight, directly sense amino acids has very significant implications for coming up with new ways to help people to control their body weight within healthy bounds.”
These findings could be key in developing appetite-suppressants which could treat obesity – one of the leading causes of heart disease and subsequently death in the UK.
