When you stay in a hotel, you expect it to be clean and tidy on arrival. However, there is one thing that is swarming with germs no matter where you stay: The hotel room hair dryer. An investigation by ABC News saw microbiologist Chuck Gerba conduct germ tests in nine LA hotel rooms varying in price.
Three of the rooms were lower priced, three medium price and three on the higher end of the scale.Chuck said: “There must be some things you can do with a hair dryer that I am not aware of because some of them were pretty germy.”The biggest concern in a hotel room is picking up cold, flu virus or viruses that cause diarrhoea. It doesn’t take very many to make you ill.”
Chuck tested the toilets, sinks, drinking glasses and irons among others items in the rooms. Out of the nine rooms tested, six of them had sinks with germ levels that were considered excessive.Other than the hairdryer, the room service menu was also laden with germs. At all of the hotels, the germ count on the toilets were higher levels than you would find on your toilet at home.
In response to the inverstigation, Joe McInerney of the American Hotel and Lodging Association said that catching a disease from a hotel is very rare.He added: “”Roughly four million people sleep in hotels every day and there are very, very few cases of anybody catching any type of a disease from staying in a hotel.
