Thanks to the Kardashians and Jennifer Lopez, big bums have become in-demand of late.
But a big booty isn’t just sexy, it can also mean you’re healthier.
A recent study has revealed that women who have more fat on their hips and thighs are less at risk of suffering from a heart attack, stroke and diabetes.
The study, published in the journal Cell Metabolism, found that the extra weight down below acts as a sponge which can stop fat from reaching your internal organs.
People with big bums are referred to as a pear-shaped figure, compared to an apple-shaped figure, where the fat is mainly stored around the middle and can release potentially harmful chemicals into the bloodstream more easily.
While the findings were applicable to men and women, pre-menopausal women with more hip and thigh fat held more protective properties.
Yet, the findings also revealed that these properties were less effective in women who were already overweight.
This is because the fat levels in their lungs and hearts was already too high.
The study authors said it’s better for average-sized people to be pear shaped – however due to genetics you can’t really control your body shape.
Belly fat, or visceral fat, is dangerous and releases harmful chemicals that can be detrimental to our hearts.
The fat found on hips and thighs, however, is called subcutaneous fat which isn’t nearly as dangerous to your health.
