Whether you can only last for a few seconds or you can keep going all night, you probably want to know how you compare to the average Joe.

In the past, data has lead us to believe the average sesh lasts 20 minutes, but new stats reveals it’s all over well before that.

After collecting information from 432 couples and more than 2,000 sexual encounters, Lovely revealed the average couple lasts just 12 minutes in the sack.

This might not seem long – especially as the average woman takes 20 minutes to reach orgasm – but the study didn’t specify what this included.

If it is 12 minutes of penetration, following 30 minutes of foreplay then that’s an entirely different story.

Women tend to orgasm less frequently when the entire sex session lasts less than 30 minutes. This is because foreplay is key when making a woman climax as she often needs a slower build-up.

Although 12 minutes seems pretty speedy, another study found that the average man only lasts 5.4 minutes from the moment of penile penetration.

The study included 500 couples from around the world and results ranged from 33 seconds to 44 minutes.

So, what counts as Premature ejaculation (PE)?

Premature ejaculation (PE) is the most common male sexual problem which affects roughly 30% of lads at some point in their lives, while 10% frequently suffer from it.

It’s when a man ejaculates before or very shortly after penetration meaning sex can be over all too quickly.

Typically a guy with PE will blow his load less than two minutes into sex.

Here Dr Clare Morrison, GP at Pharmica.co.uk, gives her top tips on lasting longer in bed.

1. Edging

When you’re about to blow your load, stop all things sexual straight away and distract yourself for a bit.

You don’t have to stop the fun for very long, just a few seconds can be enough.

Edging, also known as the start-stop technique, involves stimulating the penis and halting just before you ejaculate.

Quit all stimulation for 30-60 seconds and then begin again once you feel like you’re back in control.

2. Wear thicker condoms

Wearing thicker condoms – look out for products labelled “extra safe” or “performer” – can decrease sensitivity in the penis, prolonging your love-making sessions.

3. Just breathe

Another tip that may help some men is to take a deep, long breath before you ejaculate as this can delay your orgasm and slow stimulation down.
