With over 50,000 new cases in both males and females each year, breast cancer is the most common form of cancer in the UK and accounts for 15% of all diagnoses.
And while there are many major and common signs of breast cancer, there are also some lesser-known but just as common signs.
Here are eight signs you may have breast cancer – if any of these are applicable to you, make an appointment with your GP.
1. Swelling around your armpit and collar bone
Women are taught to check their boobs for lumps but it’s important to check the upper chest and armpit area too as these areas also contain breast tissue.
2. Crusting or a rash around the nipple
While nipple irritation is common during breast feeding, if you notice a change in the skin while not breast feeding make an appointment with your doctor.
3. Breasts feel thicker
If you know how your breasts feel, then you will know when something isn’t right. Some boobs are naturally lumpy so take notice if new lumps appear or one area begins to feel thicker.
4. Your nipple has been inverted
This is when your nipple has been pulled into the breast or looks different than normal (i.e. a change in position or shape).
5. Change in skin texture
Dimpling and puckering can look and feel similar to orange peel which is why you should always do your breast exam in front of a mirror.
6. A change in the size of the breast
While most women naturally have one breast bigger than the other, a sudden or unusual change in the shape or size is worth getting checked out.
7. Persistent pain in your breast or armpit
Around your period breast pain is perfectly normal, but if you have persistent pain around your breast and armpit this is not.
8. Discharge
If you are not pregnant or breastfeeding, be wary of liquid coming from the nipple without it being squeezed.
