If caffeine is a necessity in your everyday life – you might be onto something as it could make you live longer.
In fact, a new study has revealed that the more coffee consumed, the lower the risk of an early death.
The research comes from a decade-long study out of Spain that required 20,000 men to document their food habits.
Researchers looked at their coffee consumption, lifestyle, previous health conditions and socio-demographic characteristics.
They followed up with each patient once per year and took note of who had died during this time.
With this information, the researchers concluded that length of life could be directly correlated to coffee consumption.
A total of 337 participants died over the course of the study and researchers determined that those who drank at least four cups of coffee per day had a 64% lower risk of death than those who didn’t drink coffee.
What’s more is participants who had six cups of coffee per day lowered their risk of a young death by a further 22% – totalling 86% less than the non-coffee drinkers.
Lead researcher Adela Navarro said: “Our findings suggest that drinking four cups of coffee each day can be part of a healthy diet in healthy people.”
Meanwhile, while caffeine can help with longevity, it could also cause weight gain.
Another recent study found people who drink caffeinated coffee are more likely to eat sugary food as the caffeine makes sweets taste duller and therefore they eat more.
