Angelina Jolie has largely spent the last few years behind the camera focusing on her directing, but she will be moving back onto the screen for the sequel to Disney’s Maleficent.
Speaking at the Telluride Film Festival (via Deadline), the actress confirmed the news and gave us hope for a suitably spectacular follow-up.
“We have been working on the script and this is going to be a really strong sequel,” she said. There’s no word yet on if Elle Fanning will be reprising her role as Princess Aurora too, or Brenton Thwaites as Prince Phillip.
There were reports recently that Universal wanted Angelina for its Bride of Frankenstein Dark Universe picture, but it seems the Maleficent follow-up is the next movie on her agenda.
Jolie teased her return to acting, not just for the Disney sequel, at the festival as well. The actress-turned-director has taken a year off for her “family situation” and to “take care of [her] kids,” but she expressed interest of resuming her work in front of the camera.
“When I feel it’s time for me to go back to work, I’ll be able to go back to work,” she said. “I’ve been needed at home. I hope [to work again] in the months to come.”
The news of the sequel follows Jolie speaking out about her “difficult” year after her separation from husband Brad Pitt.
“I don’t enjoy being single. It’s not something I wanted. There’s nothing nice about it. It’s just hard,” she told The Sunday Telegraph. “Sometimes maybe it appears I am pulling it all together, but really I am just trying to get through my days.”
Jolie’s most recent directorial effort was Netflix film First They Killed My Father, which hits the streaming service on September 15.
