You’ve probably heard of using peanut butter to get gum out of hair, but have you ever heard of using it get longer hair?
That’s exactly what an American missionary living in Micronesia claims has helped her grow and maintain 64-inch-long strawberry blonde hair that touches her ankles when dry and reaches the floor when wet. She enjoys a spoonful of it every day – and this is apparently, the result:
“I have done this faithfully for years, and can honestly say that peanut butter makes my hair healthy and strong, and also makes it grow fast,” 33-year-old Andrea Colson writes on her blog. “Peanut butter is a miracle hair-grower!”
As for what she does coat her hair in, Colson says she has become a big fan of coconut oil in just the last couple of years.
“A few hours before washing my hair, I take it down from my hairstyle for that day and apply coconut oil to the length,” she writes. “When I get in the shower I rinse the oil out of my hair in cool water, then condition-wash-condition as usual.”
She’s referring to her method of cleansing her super-long hair, meaning she uses conditioner before shampoo, and then again after – and she’s very loyal to Herbal Essences Long Term Relationship Shampoo and Conditioner.
“I use a fistful of conditioner and a small not-quite-palm-size amount of shampoo,” she writes. “I rinse all that out with cool water, then condition the bottom again. I leave that conditioner on for several minutes before rinsing my hair one last time in cool water.”
Colson’s other tips for growing and maintaining super-long hair? Regular trims, apple cider vinegar rinses, combing her from the bottom and allowing it to air-dry overnight.
Although many of Colson’s tips fall in line with what the pros recommend for growing strong, long hair, experts aren’t entirely convinced by her daily peanut butter claims. Even though peanut butter is a great source of protein and other nutrients, Jaclyn London, MS, RD, CDN, the Good Housekeeping Institute’s Nutrition Director, says, “As long as you’re a healthy adult eating regular meals and snacks daily, it’s highly unlikely that peanut butter will be the game-changer that expedites your hair growth. Sorry!”
That doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy peanut butter every day (as long as you’re not allergic to it). Just don’t expect miracles from it!
