There’s no place like home to make you feel relaxed and comfortable. But it’s not just being around your familiar and comforting belongings that make you feel happier – the interior design of your home can also significantly boost your wellness.
Wayfair’s resident style advisor, Nadia McCowan Hill, shares her top trend tips for creating a space that will boost your mood and enhance your sense of wellbeing.
1. Colour me happy
“It’s no secret that colour can have a massive effect on mood, and in 2018, the hues we choose will be at the centre of how we create home happiness,” Nadia said.
To pick the best colours to create wellness in the home, here are the perfect mood-boosting shades for different rooms of the home…
Home office – Opt for accents of yellow to promote creativity and vitality or pops of Pantone’s Colour of the Year, Ultra Violet, to promote empowerment.
Bedroom and bathroom – Green drives regeneration and renewal, making it a perfect hue for restorative spaces, like the bedroom and bathroom.
Living room – Bold bright hues including turquoise, fuchsia and tangerine are the tones which are set to energise the mood of our living rooms.
Accessories – Cushions, rugs, wall art and decorative accents in happy shades are all perfect picks, which create easy impact without breaking the bank.
2. Plants aplenty
“2017 was the year of the plant, with the interiors world recognising the power of potted plants – from trailing ferns to tropical palms – to give a home a natural mood-boosting lift,” Nadia said.
“In 2018, this trend is set to continue, but there will be a move away from the hot tropics in favour of more classic botanical styles, which convey a natural serenity and understated sense of calm in our spaces.”
Get the look in your own home with these items:
- Cushions emblazoned with decorative leaf prints
- Botanical-themed wall art
- Leafy wallpaper
Nadia suggests that injecting green into your home through a distinct foliage design can help promote your wellbeing. Greenery also helpfully complements many different colour schemes.
3. Nature’s bounty
“It’s perhaps not surprising that homeware made of natural materials promotes a feel-good factor and a huge trend this year will be mixing these materials for an artfully understated finish,” Nadia said.
“In the kitchen, look out for marble chopping boards, perfectly imperfect wonky ceramic dinnerware, blonde wood furniture and hand-blown glassware, for a look that brings the best of nature’s bounty together.
“A pared-back palette of neutrals with accents of trending sage, mint and peach is the perfect accompaniment.”
4. Comfort is key
Your home décor is about more than just style and function – it should also focus on comfort and how it makes you feel.
“At recent interiors shows there was a huge emphasis on comfort and an emergence of rounded, enveloping and tactile items,” Nadia said. “Layering up your home with cosy throws, shaggy sheep skins and textured pieces gives your home a wonderfully warming and inviting quality. Oversized seating is another great way to create an enveloping and nurturing space.”
