The Hollywood A-lister has been confirmed to play Mary Louise Wright, mother-in-law to Nicole Kidman’s character Celeste.
Meryl Streep has been confirmed to star in the second season of Sky Atlantic’s hit TV show Big Little Lies.
The Oscar-winning actress will play Mary Louise Wright, mother-in-law to Nicole Kidman’s character Celeste Wright.
The show about a group of housewives in Monterey, California, will resume in 2019 following a successful first season which saw it pick up a host of awards, including two Golden Globes.
Streep has been hailed this year for her role in Steven Spielberg’s Pentagon Papers drama The Post, for which she has earned her 21st Oscar nomination.
In Big Little Lies, her character will appear following the mysterious death of her son, Perry, a domestic abuser.
The 68-year-old star has spoken about domestic abuse before, describing it an “insidious disease” at last year’s Emmy Awards.
The news of Streep’s casting has been hailed by the show’s female leads.
Laura Dern has called it an “acting dream come true”, while Reese Witherspoon wrote on Instagram to say she was “beyond thrilled to have the one, the only Meryl Streep joining the cast”.
“Get ready for more wine, secrets, and Big Little Lies. Monterey better watch out,” Witherspoon added.
