The crippling phenomena is set to sweep across the globe on Friday caused by solar winds that flow from a hold in the sun’s atmosphere.

Geomagnetic storms are widely feared by boffins for their ability to affect power systems across the world, with G-5 category events being capable of collapsing power outlets.

Space Weather Prediction Centre boffins said, however, Friday’s storm is G-1 and could still knock out satellite signals and power grids.

The largest-recorded storm happened in 1859 and has been dubbed the Carrington Event, or the 1859 Solar Superstorm.

It knocked out telegraph systems in Europe and North America and incredible auroras were spotted in many parts of the world.

Anxious space boffins have previously warned the public have no idea of the danger they are in.

Speaking in December, Brian Gaensler, an astrophysicist at the University of Toronto, gave a stark warning of the carnage solar flares can cause.

He said: “The concern here is that if the radiation from a solar flare hits the earth, it can knock out satellites, disrupt mobile phones, and other forms of communication.”

Effects of a solar storm could last months – or even years – as authorities would have to repair all the damaged infrastructure.

Specialist insurance firm Lloyd’s of London estimates the repair bill could cost up to £1.8 trillion.
