If having a good hair day every day is on your new year’s resolutions list, you might want to consider changing the way you cleanse it.
With a movement afoot to begin treating your hair and scalp with as much care as the skin on your face – from double cleansing to moisturising it – experts say you should go back to your roots to ensure healthy hair that looks its best.
Starting in the shower, you may have cemented bad shampooing habits. Paul Windle, one of London’s top hairdressers and co-founder of Windle & Moodie, says the way you wash your locks could make all the difference to how they look. Below are his top tips.
Firstly, use less shampoo
‘People tend to use far too much shampoo,’ Windie says. ‘The trick is to shampoo twice and both times use a small amount of product.’ Think, no more than a two pence coin.
Forget the lather
‘Don’t look for lather,’ he explains. ‘As the more dirt and grease on the hair the less chance of lather.’ Many modern sulphate-free shampoos won’t lather like traditional formulas anyway, and getting that squeaky-clean feeling isn’t necessarily a good thing.
Then rinse, rinse, rinse
Windie confirms: ‘It’s the rinsing that takes the dirt away, not the shampoo. There is no such thing as over-rinsing.’ We’re all for cutting corners in the morning, but don’t make your rinse one of them.
Think less about shampooing, more about cleansing
‘Thorough cleansing with a good quality shampoo is crucial when it comes to a healthy scalp and nourishing the hair,’ he adds, naturally recommending one of his own brand’s antioxidant, high-grade tea filled shampoos.
