If you always thought your stubborn streak was something you needed to try and squash, then you may want to have a rethink.

According to a new study, stubbornness may actually be the key to a longer life, along with the ability to keep busy and a positive mental outlook.

The research, by the University of Rome and University of California San Diego, revealed that, rather than lots of exercise and a healthy diet, determination to carry on can have a big impact on living to a grand old age. Other factors that could see you reach 100 years’ old included having religious faith, a good work ethic and love of family.

The study analysed 29 participants aged between 91 and 101, from villages in Cilento, southern Italy. Though their physical health was worse than their younger relatives aged 51 to 75, it was found that their mental health was in a better state. The higher the age, the greater the sense of wellbeing, it seemed.

“The group’s love of their land is a common theme and gives them a purpose in life,” lead author Anna Scelzo told Mail Online.

“Most of them are still working in their homes and on the land. They think, ‘This is my life and I’m not going to give it up’.”

Other characteristics of the older age group were having a sense of control, being more domineering and caring less about what others thought about them. A resilience in the face of difficulties, an adaptability and a connection to their environment were also suggested to be beneficial for a longer life expectancy.
