Now that we’re deep into December (read: it’s the 5th), the festive period is very much upon us, and people are already knee deep in decorations and smothered by baubles.
Which is all well and good, until you realise you’ve been putting your Christmas tree lights up all wrong, and actually haven’t been nailing the decorating thing at all.
Woah.
According to designer Francesco Bilotto, who spoke to HouseBeautiful.com, the traditional method of wrapping lights horizontally around the branches of your tree is not the best way to do it.
Instead, we should drape them vertically from bottom to top, to prevent any lights getting lost in the middle.
‘This way every tip of your tree, from branch to branch, will twinkle with delight,’ she explained. ‘Another added bonus is when you dismantle your tree and take off the lights, it’ll be easier and less messy to remove strands from the exterior of the tree — rather than fighting a stubborn almost dried branch.’
He definitely has a point – if you drape them vertically, it means you’re less likely to miss a giant patch of tree, and not have enough lights to go around.
Francesco recommends you begin at the top with the end that doesn’t have a plug and let them hang to the bottom of the tree.
