Guys seem more desirable for a one-night stand if they have a scar on their face.
According to Robert Burriss, a psychologist from Basel University in Switzerland, those with smaller facial scars are seen as a better option for short-term flings.
After carrying out extensive research into scars and attractiveness, the expert found that scarring only boosts attractiveness if the relationship is short-lived.
So the bad news for blokes looking for lasting relationships is that they’re no more desirable to the opposite sex than those without scars.
Robert said: “When scarring is seen as the result of a violent encounter, it signifies strength or bravery in a guy.
“Or it could be due to an accident, and so evidence of a risk-taking personality.
“Either way, it’s another way of assessing a man’s masculinity.”
Researchers believe that the story behind the scar can also boost sex appeal.
Robert said: “A moderate-sized facial scar makes a man more attractive for a fling.
“Women tend to prefer macho men for short-term relationships, perhaps because a muscled physique of chiselled jaw is a sign of healthy genes.
“Likewise, a scar could be circumstantial evidence of a man’s combative nature or ability to withstand injury, and so make him more attractive for a fling.
“However, women are more likely to value less masculine traits in a long-term partner, because these are associated with a willingness to invest in the relationship.”
Meanwhile researchers found that women with scars are as attractive as those without.
If you feel self-conscious about scarring, you can take steps to diminish their appearance.
Skin experts at Fagron UK recommend Nourisil MD, a special self-drying silicone gel.
Marketing and Innovation Manager Dan Barton said: “You can’t argue with a psychologist.
“Maybe in years gone by the idea of a real action hero with rugged looks and battle scars was appealing for women.
“But times change and so to do the laws of attraction.
“The modern man is more clean cut and cares a lot more about his appearance. So if there are any men with struggling to find that special someone, maybe we can help.”
