It’s not that we don’t love new shoes; it’s that they sadly don’t love us. There’s nothing worse than buying a brand new pair of boots or heels, only to find them cutting your feet to shreds as soon as you dare to try and walk down the street in them.

Something that can often mean we have to leave new (if a little blood-stained) shoes banished to the back of the wardrobe, unused and unworn forevermore.

So, when someone shared this very speedy and highly effective tip for wearing in new shoes with us, we jumped at the chance to try it out.

We did it, it works, and here it is for you to try at home…

Top tips for wearing in new shoes

  • Put on your biggest, thickest pair of socks – we’re talking ski or bed socks here, maybe even double up if you can.
  • Squeeze your sock-covered feet into your new shoes.
  • Then put your hairdryer on the lowest setting and stretch your feet every which way inside the shoes, while blasting the leather (or pleather) with the hairdryer.
  • Take care not to stick the hairdryer nozzle to the leather itself, as this can cause the hairdryer to overheat and possibly break.
  • Take your feet outside of the shoes and step firmly on the heel, the toe, bend the sides of the shoe, all while aiming the hairdryer at the same spot, at the same time. Basically softening every part of the shoe that would give you a blister if left stiff and hardened.
